About Building by the Land
Building by the Land is a project that was started by David Herman, as a portfolio and exploration of woodworking projects and craftsmanship in close contact with Nature and the environment that surrounds it. The love for slow production and green woodworking started to emerge and finally evolved into a deep study of green woodworking Chairs.
Building by the Land is a love letter to green woodworking and traditional crafts, to craftsmanship, a deep respect to Nature and the environment – a countermovement to overproduction and overconsumption – a way to connect to the land and only take what we need to create timeless everyday objects that will be passed down to future generations
About David Herman
David Herman discovered his love for woodworking in the town of Stolzenhagen in East Germany, north-east of Berlin. With a background in acoustics and music, he went on a journey of learning woodworking. As a half-time job he makes music instruments (out of wood, of course) and the other half of his time he dedicated to further his craft and knowledge of Chair making using green woodworking Techniques.
David learned a lot from books and did two Chair making courses. The first in Germany with Michael Schütte and the second with his book mentor Mike Abbott in England. He is part of the Pole-lathe Turners association, and you will likely find him at the yearly help Bodgers Ball in England. At home, he designs and creates Chairs in his small workshop as well as the tools to make them, like pole lathes, shaving horses, work benches and steam boxes.
